Rob Powell counselling and psychotherapy

“The therapist must strive to create a new therapy for each client.”   Irvine Yalome

One-to-one psychotherapy

My work is anchored in a deep reflection on what it means to be human in our times. Life, it seems, is increasingly complex and full of dilemmas.  These are common to us all and in times of anguish or change we all need somebody to talk to. Sometimes talking to a caring therapist can be a really good way to move forward.

I also work as a scientist, so seeking truthful answers is a big part of my life. Psychotherapy is a parallel truth-seeking process, where the act of living itself is explored. Instead of experiments, we build a therapeutic relationship and the foundation of our work is therefore to foster mutual trust so that everything that you need to explore can be included in our work together. Often people will share things they have held as secret for decades.
Therapy with me offers a powerful way to understand what is really going on, and the life events and relationships that have shaped you. The deeper our self awareness, the better able we are to make good decisions going forward – ones that are truly in our best interest.

My working model for being with clients draws on the best traditions and research within the field of psychotherapy. This includes existential philosophy, person centered therapy, attachment theory, cognitive and behavioral processes and neurobiology. There are many different kinds of conversation we can have but put most simply, we will explore what it means to be you and how you can move towards the change you are seeking.

Couples therapy

Get the support and help that you need.

Relationship counselling provides a safe place for couples to explore the depth and breadth of their relationship - what is going well as well as the issues that have brought the relationship into therapy.

I work to facilitate better communication and a deeper mutual understanding between couples.  My belief is that the relationship has always been ‘co-created’, i.e. both partners share a responsibility for where things have gotten to, and both will have work to do in order to move forward in a different way.

Working with me is challenging but can be very rewarding. I bring a relational and psychodynamic approach to couples therapy, where all the questions of life can be explored. What is the meaning of our relationship? What is the story that we are telling together and what are the dreams that are contained in our relationship? Sometimes we have to go right back to our individual roots to really understand what is going on together and in the present.

I am optimistic that change is always possible. in a long term relationship there can be many different chapters and doing therapy together can be a rejuvenating process of growth, change and reclamation.   however it remains a simple truth that not all relationships can be preserved and not all relationships should be. Where it becomes apparent that an irreversible breakdown between couples has occurred, I work to facilitate a compassionate ending and invite exploration of the most thoughtful way to disentangle the relationship.
